This seminar will be focused on exploring a body of various theoretical texts which have, in the last decade, a) explored the social and cultural challenges of a critique of the "coloniality of modernity", that is, the constitution of modern western societies in and by a history of enslavement of peoples and of colonialism and b) suggested alternative decolonial options of thinking sociality, conviviality, and knowledge making under the conditions of global postmodernity. In that sense, it will be a seminar that widens your horizon as to the social, cultural and political conditions of transnationality. Your work in the first weeks will actually consist of close reading those theoretical texts. In the most literal sense of the word, this will be, accordingly, a mentored LEKTUERESEMINAR. Please be prepared for a master's level of willingness to engage self-reflectively with theoretical critique. In the first weeks the seminar will be held as a mentored reading group by Prof. Broeck; Prof. Mignolo will be here in Bremen in June to take on the teaching for 4 weeks, plus give 2 public lectures which will be obligatory parts of the seminar, dates to be announced. via stud ip, and maybe skype. Prof. Mignolo will also share in our work before actually coming to Bremen. Details of communication will be settled in the first seminar sessions. The seminar will begin on April 13th, because Broeck will be out of town in the first semester week. Very good English reading ability, and rather good spoken English is a requirement for this seminar. The language of discussion will be German in the first weeks with Prof. Broeck, then english with Prof. Mignolo. A syllabus with required reading will be available on stud ip as of feb. 15.
